Grooming the Havanese
Over the years I have learned a lot about having happy, healthy dogs. First, please feed your dog a quality dog food. Your dog is only as healthy as the quality of food you feed it. You will cut down on vet bills when your dog is healthy. Health comes from the inside out and is reflected by the lack of skin issues and glossy coats. Do some research on what foods are of high quality and also do a google search on what brands have been recalled.
Grooming
Havanese need to be groomed several times a week. This stimulates the skin and produces a healthy, shiny coat. Whether you keep your dog in a puppy cut (very cute and the easiest to keep) or a show coat, they need to be brushed frequently and their eyes and the hair around their mouth (try a mustache comb) need to be cleaned. Use a coat spray to help keep the knots down and make brushing easier. You should use slicker or pin brush that is soft to brush them and keep them knot free. Try the bruh on your arm first. If it scratches you it will hurt your dog. Start grooming when you first get your puppy. While your new puppy is on your lap, finger through their hair and if you find a small knot, get out your brush and brush through their coat. Make it pleasurable and relaxing and get them to love being groomed. If you do this frequently you will not have knots and your puppy will enjoy the time and relaxed moment of the groom with you. Always check their coat for knots and get them out as soon as you find them. Bathe about every two weeks or if they get dirty. If they seem clean you can wait longer so as not to strip the oils from their coat and not break the hair if you leave them in a show coat. YouTube is a great resource for information! Just search under Havanese. Another informative web sight is HavaneseForum.com You can interact with other Havanese owners, ask questions and even form or join play groups in your area.
